Maria Lyon started her career in finance in 1980, with California Teachers Federal Credit Union in Ventura, and later moved to Santa Maria in 1982. Lyon worked as a new accounts representative at Great Western Bank and branch sales manager at Santa Barbara Savings and Loan.

In 1990, she entered the title and escrow field as a business development representative. In 2002, she returned to lending with Countrywide Home Loans in Santa Maria. She was recognized as a top producer every year. In July 2008, Lyon began working with Hertiage Oaks Bank in San Luis Obispo.

Maria Lyon currently serves as the HBA Membership Chair and is the HBA Executive Committee Secretary.
